The History and Mission Statement of the HHFD

History of Station 2-1

A town meeting was called on November 12, 1904 by a group of Citizens for the purpose of discussing, some provisions for fire protection due to the increasing number of homes being built. On December 5, 1904 a special meeting was held and the Haddon Heights Vol Fire Co. No. 1 was formed with 52 members. The first Chief was Charles A. Eckstein. Their first piece of equipment was a hand—drawn hose cart, with a 70 gallon chemical tank.

On March 11, 1907, the Reliance Hook & Ladder Co. was originated with 32 members. Their first Chief was William E. Johnson. Their apparatus was a hand—drawn hook & ladder truck. This company lasted for a little over two years and then was merged with Fire Co. No. 1.

On November 12, 1914 a 32” General Alarm Bell was installed in the cupola of the new Town Hall where the fire company was housed, commencing in 1908. This bell was replaced with the first electric siren in September 1919. (The Bell is now displayed in front of the Meeting Hall).

On March 15, 1915, a meeting was held in Haddon Heights, with representatives from seven local communities, for the purpose of organizing a County Firemen’s Association. The first meeting of this organization was held March 29, 1915. The first president was Volney Bennett of Haddon Heights. One of the Charter members who through his input and service to this organization helped to make the organization what it is today. This man was Chief Oliver P. Lambert (Chief of HHFD — 1934—1957).

The years 1915—1916 saw our company become motorized. In March of 1922 the Company was incorporated as the Haddon Heights Vol. Fire Co. No. 1. In June of 1929 the company name was changed to the Haddon Heights Fire Department.

Mission Statement 

The Haddon Heights Fire Department provides service to the residents of Haddon Heights and to surrounding communities to preserve and to protect life and property. The Haddon Heights Fire Department accomplishes this by providing highly trained fire fighters to the scene of a call for service in a timely manner on properly equipped and maintained apparatus. The Haddon Heights Fire Department will also aggressively work with the citizenry to provide comprehensive education and training in methods of fire prevention and providing a fire safe environment in their daily lives. The Haddon Heights Fire Department will strive to protect the lives of our neighbors, ourselves and property of others; however, the protection and preservation of life will always be our priority.
